Stockholm County Council

Stockholm County Council’s mandate is to ensure that its residents have access to healthcare and public transport as well as preventing health problems.  Important elements of the County Council's operation are long-term traffic planning, regional growth and development, to make culture acsessible to all of its residents and environmental issues.

Stockholm County Council’s activities affect over one fifth of Sweden's population. The geographical area covered by the council includes 26 municipalities of various sizes and characters, with a total population of 1.9 million.

Stockholm’s residents have great opportunities to influence their community. The County Council is a democratic organisation with elections every four years to determine its political focus. The Moderates, Liberals, Christian democrats and Centre Party share a political majority for the 2006 – 2010 term of the County Council’s mandate.

Some facts about Stockholm County Council

  • During one year 1.2 million people, 60 percent of the county´s population, come into contact with local healthcare services.
  • On a normal weekday around 700 000 people travel by public transport.
  • The County Council is one of the biggest emplyers in the country, with around 45 000 employees. 96 percent of the employees work in healthcare. Around 80 percent of employees are women.
