Important events in 2016

The first patients were welcomed to Stockholm County Council's newest hospital, New Karolinska Solna. The County Council also took several important steps in the preparations for the start of construction of the new Metro. These were some of the important events of 2016.

Tenth consecutive year with a surplus


Stockholm County Council had a surplus for 2016 of SEK 1,708 million before transition costs. This is SEK 1,365 million higher than 2015. This means that 2016 was the tenth consecutive year that Stockholm County Council reported a positive annual financial outcome. After transition costs, the surplus was SEK 808 million.

Healthcare is being expanded and modernised

To meet tomorrow’s need for care, the County Council is currently carrying out one of the largest investments in healthcare ever. In total, SEK 41 billion extra is being invested over the period 2017-2026, in part to technically improve and expand the County’s hospitals, provide conditions for new ways of working and offer more care episodes.

Public transport is being expanded and modernised


Growing numbers of people choose to travel with public transport provided by Stockholm County Council. The total number of passengers in public transport on land has increased compared with the previous year. Travel in public transport for the disabled and public marine transport also increased. Ticket revenues increased by 4.2 per cent compared with the year before.

Culture in the County Council

The objective of the County Council’s cultural activities is to contribute to a high-quality, accessible cultural life. Important means for achieving the goal are the external support to the County’s cultural actors, association life, study associations and folk high schools.

In 2016, around 2,100 clinical researchers were active in the various areas of the County Council.
