Stockholm County Council is led by the popularly elected County Council Assembly. The County Council’s operations are financed mainly through the county council tax, and are carried out both under the County Council’s own management and by contractors.

The majority of the County Council's income comes from taxes, which are paid by´the county's inhabitants. A smaller portion comes from patient fees and public transport fares.

In addition to the county council tax and general state grants, the County Council also receives targeted state grants – for example for reduced levels of sickness absence.

Stockholm County Council's biggest costs are within healthcare and public transport.

Commissioner and implementer

Within the County Council, a distinction is made between the roles of commissioner and implementer. Operations are carried out both by the County Council's own organisations and companies, and by external contractors. All operations are financed via the county council tax.

High levels of expertise – more women than men

Most of the County Council's employees have roles that require a university education. About 70 per cent of the County Council's managers are women. The distribution between female and male managers corresponds well with the distribution of the County Council's employees in general.

Environmental certification – ISO 14001

All of the County Council's organisations and companies have environmental management systems that are certified in accordance with the international standard ISO 14001.

Procurement requirements – environmental and social responsibility

Each year, Stockholm County Council procures goods and services worth more than SEK 46 billion. Contracted suppliers are expected to meet strict demands in terms of both environmental work and social responsibility.
